Christmas Episode, New Characters, Etc.
So, we haven't talked about the new characters. I really love the new morgue assistant. I'm not sure how I feel about Fred. I like the idea of her, but I need to see more of the character in action. Are we willing to link George to either of these new ladies? Both of them would present challenges for him.

Also, does anyone have hopes for the two hour Christmas special? Do we think the show is going to have a Season Ten and Eleven? I liked the introduction of the house and wondered if they had that house picked out already for the coming seasons.

Am I the only one hoping that medical advances allow Julia to get pregnant? I can see a different side of Murdoch surfacing in that event. While he's taken a very forward thinking view of Julia's freedom, I feel that a delicate condition might bring up old issues for him and make him overly protective. But it is also possible they will adopt children who will make the story more involved. Certainly, the house has room for more people. Not sure any of this is part of the books, as I haven't read them, but I like complicating a character's life and I think children can work in a show as long as the idea of them is handled intelligently.

I LOVE the new morgue assistant! As soon as I saw her in the background and being curious, I was jumping up and down hoping she'd be a more involved part of the morgue. Loved Brackenreid's response to the fatuous official guy about her being turned down because she's female. "There's been nothing but women in this morgue as long as I've been here!"

The other thing I'm curious about is Pendrake and his ladyfriend. That episode felt almost like a backdoor pilot for a spinoff "Pendrake and friends and steampunk" series, but I don't know how likely that is to be true.

I only just heard about the Christmas special myself yesterday (I avoid the commercials because they;re usually spoilery) and didn't know it was going to be two hours long! I have a weakness for the Victorian era at Christmas so I'll probably be quite thrilled with anything they do short of killing any major character, which I don't think is likely.

As far as future seasons go, it will all depend on CBC funding and the willingness of the core actors to continue in the roles, I figure. It's an anchor drama for the CBC, so I doubt they'd be cancelling it short of a disaster in the funding.

Julia getting pregnant is a nice hope, but I think with her backstory and the character dynamic between her and Murdoch that resulted from it that that's not going to be an easy fix, despite advances in medicine. Organ damage and scar tissue aren't easy to fix even now. I can however see them adopting, maybe a child that was left an orphan by a crime?

My thoughts, even at the time Julia spoke of her issues with getting pregnant, was that the medical establishment often told women they couldn't have children, even up into the 1970's when they could.

Also, I'm not sure about the development of alternative methods of fertilization and delivery. We don't know enough about Julia's condition, only that it was caused by a botched abortion. I agree it was a huge plot point and shouldn't be resolved easily, but I also don't trust in the medical judgements of the time, especially when it comes to women's health issues.

But my main thought was about Julia's history, a pregnancy would be scary for them both...which adds lots of drama to a show...but I like the idea of them adopting, because that would immediately add interesting characters. Babies are cute, but not very dramatic once we get beyond the birth complications. LOL

Glad you also are loving the new morgue attendant. I need to recall her name. Rebecca James. Miss James.

hoping we go to at least S11

Oh, my! Little Roland! Sniffle! I have come here to commiserate.

However, I do think this sets us up nicely for a miracle pregnancy for Julia. As I noted in previous posts, woman's health was a closed book until very recently. So, it is possible that she was told the damage was more severe than it was...or that it would simply be very difficult for her to carry to term in the opinion of her doctor.

If the advice was "don't get pregnant" instead of "you can't get pregnant" she now has ample reason to risk her life for a child, having loved and lost Roland. And having seen just how much William enjoyed fatherhood. I can see this being a theme in the next season...can Julia bring a child to term?

I hope we get another season or two.

As for children, it doesn't matter to me if they have any or not. They seem pretty happy with each other for now. If they do, like someone else mentioned, adoption would be great. I could see Julia going against the grain and wanting a child from a different ethnic background. It would be great it if came about during a murder investigation, as someone else had mentioned.

It's still too early for me to comment on the new morgue assistant.
